Speeders escaped: VW Golf chases through Landshut at 200 km/h!
In the Bavarian town of Landshut, a crazy race caused a stir when a VW Golf fled from the police at over 200 km/h on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. when the driver ignored the red light at a traffic light and pressed the accelerator pedal all the way at the B 15 junction. Loud Region current A patrol from the Landshut traffic police station pursued the car on Outer Regensburger Straße. But the fleeing driver accelerated and recklessly overtook several vehicles, forcing the officers to break off the pursuit so as not to endanger other road users.
“We ask for information,” the police point out, because the driver was ultimately able to escape. The risk he posed not only to himself but to all other road users underscores the urgency of increasing road safety. Traffic accidents are a ubiquitous problem in Germany, as current statistics show.
Current traffic accident statistics
In its traffic accident statistics for 2024, the Landshut police station reports an almost constant number of traffic accidents, which at 4,384 accidents was slightly below the 4,376 of the previous year. The number of injuries remains particularly worrying: 837 people were injured, including 107 seriously injured. The main causes of accidents are still failure to give way and errors when turning, turning and reversing, such as Rundschau24 highlights.
Fortunately, the year 2024 brought a decrease in speeding accidents, which at 52 accidents were significantly lower than the 73 in 2023. Nevertheless, the increase in the number of people injured in speeding accidents from 43 to 45 is an alarming signal. In addition, cycling accidents increased slightly, which is a worrying trend for many cyclists.
Road safety in view
At the national level, the data is also sobering: in 2024 there were loud Statista around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in Germany, a decrease compared to the previous year. At 2,770, the number of traffic deaths remains at a much lower level than in the 1970s, although here too there is a slower decline in traffic deaths.
A particularly important point is the most common causes of traffic accidents: insufficient distance, inadequate speed and driving under the influence of alcohol remain the main factors for personal injuries. It is therefore not surprising that the police are planning increased controls in Lower Bavaria in order to focus more on speed monitoring, as well as driving skills and distracted driving.
Overall, the challenge of reducing injuries and traffic fatalities remains one of the central points of traffic safety work in Germany until the desired “Vision Zero”. The police urgently appeal to all road users to comply with traffic rules and thus actively contribute to improving safety on our roads.
