Man disappeared in Büchlberg quarry – major search operation started!
On Saturday afternoon, the idyllic surroundings around the quarry in Büchlberg in the Passau district became the scene of a dramatic accident. Three work colleagues from Poland ventured into the waters of the quarry, which, however, are anything but inviting due to the dangers posed by such waters. One of the men, a 46-year-old, went underwater briefly and never came back to the surface, alarming those present. The quarry is known for its ban on swimming, but many ignore this rule - something the community is now trying to combat by installing barrier tape to deter more bathers. PNP reports that ...
At around 4 p.m., the Vilshofen water rescue service, the DLRG and the Passau police began a large-scale search for the missing person. Despite the intensive efforts, the search was initially stopped after three hours without results because the conditions in the water, especially the depth, made the rescue operation even more difficult. Authorities believe the man drowned, a belief that is becoming more and more likely given the circumstances.
A tragic incident with far-reaching consequences
The sad situation brings back memories of the dangers that are often underestimated in and around the water. In 2022, 411 people drowned in Germany, including 14 children. Both the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) and other organizations are actively committed to safety in the water. On its platform DLRG issues important safety tips and draws attention to the need for education about potential dangers in the water.
The DLRG in the Büchlberg local branch, led by Daniel Reitmayer and Jochen Werner, is supporting those affected during this difficult time. Their work includes not only rescue operations, but also preventive education about the dangers posed by water. They remind you of how important it is to keep an eye on water safety, especially with children, in order to avoid tragic accidents.
The search for the missing man is expected to continue on Sunday. As the community seeks action to prevent further incidents, hope remains for a positive outcome to the tragic incident, although circumstances make this increasingly doubtful.
