Shock calls in the Starnberg area: Police warn of fraudsters!

There are currently an increasing number of shock calls in the Starnberg area and the police are sounding the alarm. The automated fraudsters claim that there has been a break-in nearby. They also claim that the name and address of the person they called were found on a piece of paper left by the burglars. This perfidious scam aims to trick unsuspecting citizens into handing over jewelry and cash to the alleged police. Fortunately, the police have not yet received any successful shock calls, but this calls for caution. According to Radio Oberland, citizens should not allow themselves to be put under pressure and, if in doubt, end such calls immediately.

But how do I best deal with such calls? The police advise not to be hesitant in such a case. It is advisable to talk to people close to you about the call and especially not to accept calls from blocked or unknown numbers. A simple rule: Use the answering machine and, if in doubt, verify the situation by calling 110.

Vigilance is required

The problem is not new. As early as May 2023, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) warned about shock calls, which are being observed more and more frequently. The perpetrators present themselves as close relatives who are in distress. This often involves pretending that a relative is involved in a traffic accident or a crime. The goal? Pressuring victims to hand over money as “bail” or “compensation.” In some cases, sums of up to 100,000 euros are even required.

The BKA therefore urges you to be vigilant: “Do not allow yourself to be put under pressure and do not reveal any personal or financial information over the phone.” Anyone who receives calls from unknown people should contact the local police station immediately.

Prevention measures and offers of help

The police also have concrete tips on how to behave: It is important never to let strangers into your home and not to hand over money or valuables to people you trust. Contact relatives at known numbers to clarify the situation. In addition, those affected should also consider the possibility of contacting advice centers such as the “WEISSER RING” on the nationwide number 116 006. There you will receive further support and information about the scams.

In today's world, when fraudsters are becoming more and more sophisticated, it is important to be more aware. Stay vigilant and raise awareness of this issue in those around you. Get informed and help protect the community.
