Lewis Capaldi triumphs at Glastonbury - comeback of emotions!
Lewis Capaldi caused a stir at the 2025 Glastonbury Festival when he made a surprise appearance on the famous Pyramid Stage. After two years of barely appearing in public because of his Tourette's syndrome, this was a significant step back for the 26-year-old Scottish singer, who became world famous with his hit "Someone You Loved." There were already strains at the last festival appearance in 2023, when he had difficulties with his voice in the middle of a song and needed the support of the audience.
In front of tens of thousands of festival-goers, Capaldi thanked Platform X for the great support he had received over the years. His comeback was not only a musical event, but also a remarkable personal achievement. “It was my goal to be on stage again,” he emphasized after canceling his tour in 2023 due to health problems and Tourette’s. In his new song “Survive” he deals with the challenges he had to overcome or as they say in Austria, “there’s something there.”
Tourette syndrome and its effects
Capaldi made his Tourette syndrome public in September 2022. This neurological disorder manifests itself in involuntary movements and vocalizations, which vary in severity but are often exacerbated by stress and anxiety. Motor and vocal tics can vary in severity - from sudden movements to noises that are uttered involuntarily.
In his case, Capaldi experienced more frequent tics during his performance, particularly during the song "Someone You Loved". The audience encouraged him with singing and chanting, which strengthened the emotional connection between artist and fans. There is a widespread assumption that only a small proportion of those affected have the urge to use swear words, which often causes misunderstandings in public perception. The reality is that everyone affected faces unique challenges.
How the community reacts
The support of colleagues and personalities from the world of music and film, including Billie Eilish and Seth Rogen, shows that the issue of Tourette's is increasingly being brought into the light. Capaldi, who now has five number one hits in the UK and even released a Netflix documentary about his struggles with mental health, is using his platform to combat the stigma surrounding neuropsychological disorders.
Finally, Capaldi announced that he would be taking some time off after the festival and might not be able to appear on stage for the rest of the year. He wants to focus on his health while continuing to speak openly about his experiences. “It’s about raising awareness and encouraging people to talk about their own struggles,” is his message. And he's doing it very well so far - someone has a good knack for it.
