In Traunreut, Upper Bavaria, a serious case of vandalism is causing horror. Large-scale damage to property was carried out in several churches. The perpetrators, a 26-year-old couple from the region, have now turned themselves in to the police. According to the report by South Germans it was a hurtful act that stemmed from a fundamental antipathy toward the churches. Damage ranges from devastated altar spaces to knocked-over candles and scattered liturgical items.
What is particularly frightening is the fact that the perpetrators covered a statue of the Virgin Mary with wax and stole information materials from the parishes. They also left their own leaflets and stickers with QR codes. The affected churches represent various Christian denominations and have been the target of attacks several times in recent weeks. The police immediately began an investigation after the incidents were made public reported.
