Pokémon World Cup: 10-year-old from Türkheim surprises with a strong performance!

In an exciting week, the 2025 Pokémon World Championship took place from August 15th to 17th in Anaheim, California. Among the more than 351 participants from all over the world was a very special representative from Germany: Arne Schetters, a ten-year-old elementary school student from Türkheim in the Unterallgäu district. The little player has established himself as Germany's best Pokémon trading card player under the age of 13 and was able to win his place at this international event through local and international tournaments. Mercury reports that Arne finished in 148th place with a result of four wins and four defeats, which is a remarkable result considering the strong competition.

What did Arne expect from these competitions? On the first day of the tournament he competed against challenging juniors from countries such as China, Japan, Belgium and the USA. His father, Erik Schetters, had the opportunity to observe the different playing styles of international opponents and noticed a particularly creative approach. Arne himself was satisfied with his performance despite his final placement and is already feeling the incentive to improve further. Especially since he ranks 14th in his age category in Europe according to the official rankings from “The Pokémon Company” – not bad for a young player!

The challenge and the prizes

The Pokémon World Championship has become one of the largest events in eSports and trading card gaming over the years. This year, prizes totaling over $2 million were made available. Arne, who wanted to assert himself in this high-level competition, had set himself the goal of reaching at least the second day of the tournament. But he was impressed by the strength of his opponents and was able to overcome the challenges that came his way. BR reports that The first place winner in the trading card game can win $50,000 - a sum that is also attractive for the top places in the other categories.

As a reminder, the Pokémon World Championships are one of the largest competitions of their kind, having taken place annually since 2004. Starting with the 2025 Pokémon Championship Series, new regulations apply to qualifying based on the accumulation of Championship Points. These points are crucial for participation and show how serious the international competition is. PokeWiki informs that These championships will not only be held in the trading card game, but also in various video games such as Pokémon GO and Pokémon UNITE.

Erik Schetters expressed his pride in his son's achievements and emphasized that playing at the World Cup was a great experience for Arne, which will certainly motivate him to continue. For the young players who compete there, it is not just a competition, but also an opportunity to meet like-minded people and make new friends.
