Hamlet in a double pack: theater hit delights in Regensburg and Weiden!
Stage art is experiencing a true renaissance this year, and the OVIGO Theater in the Upper Palatinate particularly stands out with its latest production. On November 4, 2025 there was the exciting announcement of “Hamlet for You,” a humorous reinterpretation of Shakespeare's classic work performed by just two actors. Director Cora Wein describes the piece as “theatrical fun for just two actors,” which is sure to make the audience curious. The two protagonists, Max Hegner from Weiden and Katharina Mühln from Oberviechtach, present the entire plot of “Hamlet” in an entertaining way in just around 90 minutes, whereby they have to prove themselves by alternating roles.
But the anticipation does not go unrequited. With over 15,000 visitors in 2025, the OVIGO Theater shows how great the interest is in such innovative productions. The December performance dates are already in good demand, and further performances are scheduled for September 2026. The tickets are available at a regular price of 13.50 euros and a reduced price of 7 euros - this is really a good deal.
Diversity in the 2025 program
But “Hamlet for you” is not the only highlight in this year’s OVIGO Theater program. Director Florian Wein has presented the most extensive annual program in theater history for 2026, supported by the new special-purpose association “Neue Bühne Oberpfalz”. In addition to “Hamlet for you,” three other new productions have already been performed in 2025: “Blind Date,” “Dinner with Singer: Crash Course for Love Songs” and “Eureka.” In addition, the crime dinner “The Secret of the Blood Countess” will be performed in several cities, including Neunburg vorm Wald and Schwandorf.
Performances of “Hamlet for you” are scheduled for:
- 5., 6. und 7. Dezember 2025 im Regensburger W1 (Zentrum für junge Kultur)
- 12., 13. und 14. Dezember 2025 in der Regionalbibliothek Weiden
- 24. Januar 2026 im Felsenkeller Schwandorf
- Weitere Termine im September 2026 im Emil-Kemmer-Haus Oberviechtach
Shakespeare in the modern world
OVIGO's performance confirms the continued relevance and fascination that Shakespeare's works continue to have today. The contemporary interpretation of Shakespeare is also kept alive internationally in various productions. Directors like Borthwick-Leslie and Bruun address the intricate entanglements of love and poetry in “LOVE’S LABOUR’S LOST”. These explorations convey that the labors of love often go wrong and reflect the unbridled nature of human emotions. Such productions are considered more valuable than some major Broadway productions - this shows that Shakespeare's themes are still in the context of today's social issues.
The maelstrom of human passions, political conflicts and the often uncomfortable truths of life are also evident in other productions, such as “A Midsummer Night's Dream” at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna or “Much Ado About Nothing” at the Schauspielhaus Kiel. These plays present Shakespeare's universal themes in fresh and engaging ways that delight audiences both old and new.
At a time when stage art is coming up with creative ideas, the question remains open: What new paths will theater take in the future? At OVIGO Theater and the Shakespeare Society it is clear that with imagination and a good knack for improvisation, even the classics can be reinterpreted.
