Weilheim transforms dilapidated green spaces into green oases for everyone!

There is an exciting project coming up in Weilheim: The city's building committee has decided to upgrade three green spaces in order not only to promote recreation for the population, but also to make a valuable contribution to climate protection. This initiative is supported by the federal government's NKK program, which is dedicated to natural climate protection and biodiversity. The city receives a whopping 80% of funding for the projects. That's what he reports District messengers.

What exactly is planned? The measures include the design of natural green spaces, the planting of urban trees, the creation of natural oases and the unsealing of areas. The aim is to increase CO2 binding, increase biodiversity and improve water balance.

The three project areas in focus

Particular attention is paid to three selected areas:

The members of the building committee unanimously approved these measures, which is a positive sign for the initiative. All projects must be completed by the end of next year to secure federal funding.

Importance of biodiversity in urban areas

A key element of urban development is the integration of biological diversity and urban nature. A new practical guide entitled “(Re)designing Cities Green and Diverse” shows how municipal actors can incorporate these aspects into their planning. Among other things, it involves the creation of new green spaces, the renaturation of water bodies and the greening of roofs and facades. The recommendations in this guide are intended to help cities not only become more livable, but also offer valuable refuges for flora and fauna. This is considered essential to address the challenges of climate change and loss of natural habitats, according to the report Ecologic.

In summary, it can be said that with these projects the city of Weilheim is not only showing a good hand in urban planning, but is also taking responsibility for the environment. The coming years could be labor-intensive for the city and its citizens, but the gains in quality of life and ecological benefits are well worth the effort. The city plans to successfully implement these initiatives as part of the NKK program and thus serve as a role model for other communities.
