Emergency medical intervention at Würzburg train station: trains are at a standstill, clarification follows!
The Würzburg train station caused a lot of excitement on the evening of September 25th, 2025. The station was partially closed due to an emergency medical intervention after a train driver reported that a person had been hit on the tracks. The measures taken lasted about two hours until the federal police were finally able to give the all-clear. No one was found on the tracks, but it remains unclear whether the train may have actually hit a person. A colleague took over the locomotive and the train was able to continue its journey.
Weather conditions played a major role for the emergency services, as fog and dark weather prevented the use of drones or helicopters with thermal imaging cameras. Together with the police, fire brigade and the rescue service, the emergency services searched the area under and next to the stopped train with flashlights. This ensured the safety of passengers and rail operations as quickly as possible.
Temporary route closures and diversions
The temporary route closure had a significant impact on rail traffic. Particular attention was paid to the trains on line RB53, which only ran between Veitshöchheim and Gemünden (Main). The RE54 and RE55 lines also had to be rerouted without stopping. During this time, the railway set up a replacement service for the Würzburg main station – Gemünden (Main) route, which required travelers to make additional journeys, especially in the evening hours. Many trains ran late or were canceled altogether.
These incidents highlight the dangers associated with rail transport. Particularly worrying are dangerous interventions in rail traffic, which constitute a criminal offense according to Section 315 of the Criminal Code. These are already pursued when the safety of rail traffic is endangered by placing obstacles or even destroying safety devices. An example of this occurred on May 14th when a 17-year-old placed wooden pallets and branches on the tracks in Erndtebrück-Birkelbach. Despite emergency braking, a passenger train drove over the obstacles; fortunately there were no injuries.
Law enforcement and legal situation
The federal police were informed about the incident in Erndtebrück-Birkelbach and were able to quickly locate the suspect. An investigation into dangerous interference with rail traffic has been initiated, which in this context could have serious consequences. Over 30 minutes after the first incident, a train discovered another obstacle, which was fortunately removed in time.
The legal consequences for such acts are significant, ranging from fines to prison sentences lasting several years. In particularly serious cases, you can face up to ten years in prison. The protection of rail traffic is a top priority and the law provides for strict penalties to counteract such dangerous interventions.
In times when mobility plays a central role in our everyday lives, it is even more important to pay attention to safety in rail transport. Even though these incidents affect our travelers, the hope remains that everyone involved acts responsibly and such situations are avoided in the future.
