A1 closure at the weekend: traffic jam chaos between Lübeck and Hamburg!

A hot weekend is coming! On Friday evening, June 21, 2025, the A1 motorway in the direction of Hamburg will be completely closed for several days. The closure begins at 10 p.m. and is scheduled to last until 8 p.m. Sunday evening. The reason for this comprehensive measure is bridge construction work at the Bargteheide motorway junction, which has become necessary in the region in order to bring the transport infrastructure into shape. This source of information, as well as the Tageblatt, highlights the importance of the measure.

However, there is a detailed diversion for all travelers traveling on the A1: Drivers should drive from the Lübeck junction via the A20 towards Rostock until the Lübeck-Süd junction. From there take the B207 to the A24 (Berlin towards Hamburg) near Talkau. If you can't avoid it, you should be prepared for the fact that the descent at Kreuz Bargteheide will be heavily congested.

Travel weather and return traffic

With warm temperatures of up to 30 degrees Celsius, numerous visitors are expected on the Baltic Sea beaches. This not only promises a great summer feeling, but also strong return traffic on Sunday, especially for holidaymakers from North Rhine-Westphalia as well as from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg who are just returning after the Whitsun holidays. The Staumelder informs that local bypasses are likely to be congested, so travelers are advised to follow the signposted diversion via the B207 and avoid non-essential journeys if possible.

In addition to the construction work on the Bargteheide motorway junction, there are currently a total of 177 construction sites on the A1, which can significantly influence the traffic situation, as you can read on autobahn.de. This affects, among other things, construction sites between Lübeck and Fehmarn as well as several locations in and around Cologne, which are expected to last until the end of 2026.

An overview of the current construction sites

Direction Location End of the measure
Lübeck Fehmarn, between AS Neustadt i.H.-Pelzer Haken and Hasselburger Mühle 07/12/25
Cologne Euskirchen, between AS Weilerswist-West and AK Bliesheim 11/30/25
Dortmund Towards Cologne, several sections until 10/31/27 10/31/27

In summary: The coming days will be turbulent for drivers on the A1, especially during the full closure. The traffic situation promises exciting times, and it remains to be hoped that construction work will progress quickly so that everyone can travel relaxed again soon.
