Bensheim-Heppenheim: Cycle path renovation reaches new construction phase!
An important step is currently being taken for the emerging bicycle infrastructure in the region around Bensheim and Heppenheim. The cycle path along the B3 federal highway has been under repair since July. The work is progressing smoothly and the third construction phase has already begun. The first partial renovation of the second construction phase and the start of the third construction phase are expected to be asphalted on Thursday and Friday of next week, which promises a noticeable improvement in road quality for many cyclists.
The third construction phase extends over around 370 meters to the entrance to the farm road at the allotment garden settlement. The construction time is estimated to take around four weeks, and the existing traffic safety for pedestrians and cyclists will remain in place during this time. Traffic development is regulated by construction site traffic lights, while pedestrian and bicycle traffic is redirected via the surrounding network of farm roads. Hesse Mobile will continue to update the public on progress.
Renovation with foresight
What is particularly striking is the planned expansion of the cycle path, which is intended to have an avenue character through the trees. While these roots have already caused damage to the asphalt, the planned comprehensive rehabilitation aims to provide both long-term solutions and protect the tree roots. The cycle path will be renovated on a high level, i.e. around 28 centimeters higher than the current existing structure. Parts of the route will be constructed using asphalt, while heavily damaged sections will be repaired using concrete.
To access it, the cycle path will be lowered by 15 to 20 meters to the existing level so that the connection to the adjacent paths remains secure. The total construction costs are around 920,000 euros, which are financed by the federal government.
These measures are more than just necessary repairs. They represent a significant step towards better cycle path infrastructure and, last but not least, promote an environmentally friendly form of transport. Residents can look forward to a much safer and more pleasant bike ride, not least thanks to the dedicated work of regional authorities and Hessen Mobil are owed.
