Darmstadt: Pedestrian bridge over the Modau closed from November 15th!

There is news in Darmstadt that will encourage pedestrians to rethink. The pedestrian bridge over the Modau, which connects the Alte Sackgasse with other parts of the city, will be closed from Saturday, November 15th. The reason for this is serious traffic safety concerns that were discovered during a structural inspection in spring 2025. Rotting damage was discovered on the longitudinal beams of the wooden structure built in 1987. Due to these deficiencies, the engineering office has advised that the bridge be closed before the start of the wet and cold season in order to avoid possible dangers for users. This information is announced by rheinmainverlag.de.

A diversion via Odenwaldstrasse and Eberstädter Kirchstrasse is recommended. The city administration plans to install the necessary signage in a timely manner so that pedestrians and cyclists can navigate safely through the city. This measure is part of the larger initiative to modernize transport infrastructure, which is becoming increasingly important in Germany, as well as in Darmstadt.

Bridge modernization in Germany

The bridge situation is a topic that belongs on the table throughout Germany. In the last few decades, the road network has changed significantly with around 40,300 bridges and around 52,600 partial structures. A majority of these bridges were built between 1960 and 1985. The challenge posed by the increase in heavy traffic and the increasing age structure of bridges requires thorough maintenance and modernization measures. The federal government has therefore launched a bridge modernization program that aims to improve the necessary load-bearing capacity and traffic safety of the bridges, as bmv.de reports.

Instead of renovation, a replacement building for the pedestrian bridge over the Modau is planned for the summer of 2026. This was decided because the renovation was not economically viable. The new bridge will offer a barrier-free connection, which will be equipped with a ramp structure instead of the previous wooden stairs. These steps are part of a future-oriented transport policy in Germany that focuses on longevity and user-friendliness.

First, however, the old, dilapidated bridge will be demolished this year. Planning by the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office is currently in full swing. With the publicly advertised construction contracts, the city hopes to move forward with the project quickly and keep the impact on traffic flow as low as possible.

While the closure of the bridge may impose short-term limitations, the long-term benefits of modern infrastructure could prove extremely beneficial. With this in mind, it remains to be seen how the measures will be implemented in the coming months.
