Special Olympics: Hanau celebrates sporting inclusion with 650 athletes!

Today, June 23, 2025, is marked by important events in the Hanau region. A new construction site began today in Altenhaßlau to replace the drinking water pipe on Unterfrankenstrasse, which is being built as part of a comprehensive road renovation. This renovation work will continue in September to improve the infrastructure for citizens. In the meantime, the population can breathe a sigh of relief: the Gelnhausen-West junction on the A66 is open to traffic again, making travel and mobility in the region much easier.

A special highlight in Hanau is the hosting of the Special Olympics State Games, which take place from today until June 26th. Over 650 athletes compete in ten different sports, and in total more than 1,000 people are involved in the events. These games are not just a competition, but also a significant event that promotes encounters and participation. Inclusion is very important here: In addition to various competitions, an inclusive boccia game and discussion rounds on inclusion in sport are planned. There will also be an athletes' disco on Wednesday evening, which will create a festive atmosphere. According to RBB24, such sporting events have already positively influenced society's perception of athletes and have encouraged other cities to promote similar programs to implement inclusion.

Legal disputes and restructuring plans

While the sporting events in Hanau are flourishing, there is also more serious news from the region. As of today, a 23-year-old man is standing before the Hanau regional court for a robbery at a gas station in Bad Soden-Salmünster that took place in 2023. The defendant is said to have stolen a sum of 524 euros in this attack and is now facing a possible prison sentence of at least three years.

Significant infrastructure renovations are also being planned in the city of Hanau. The city is planning a fundamental renovation of the Steinheimer Bridge, which is already under heavy strain from increased heavy goods traffic. The first report on the bridge substance is available and shows an inadequate condition with a condition grade of 3.4. The renovation work is scheduled to begin in 2026, with a static recalculation of the structure expected by autumn 2025. The goal is to create modern and safe transport routes for all citizens, underlined by the city administration's clear communication to its citizens regarding the progress of these projects, as Hanau.de reports. There are currently no plans for a longer full closure of the Steinheimer Bridge, but a single-lane traffic route with traffic lights is planned.
