Commuters between Frankfurt and Offenbach will have to prepare for major changes from October 2, 2025. The section between “Frankfurt Mühlberg” and “Offenbach Ost” will be completely closed until October 20, 2025. The reason for this is extensive construction work on rails and switches as well as necessary modernization measures for fire protection, such as op online reported.
During the construction period, several S-Bahn lines will be affected: The S1 runs between Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof and Frankfurt Süd, but will be rerouted from Frankfurt-Ostendstraße, which means that the “Frankfurt Mühlberg”, “Offenbach-Kaiserlei”, “Offenbach-Ledermuseum” and “Offenbach-Marktplatz” stops will no longer be available. Construction phases and restrictions
As the RMV announced that there will be nighttime restrictions on all weekdays from October 1, 2025 until construction begins. Between 8:20 p.m. and 12:20 a.m. only one track between Offenbach Ost and Mühlberg will be in operation, and from 12:20 a.m. to 4:20 a.m. the tunnel will be completely closed. This also affects the S-Bahn lines S3, S4 and S5 until October 2nd.
The construction work is divided into several phases. During the autumn holidays, from October 2nd at 9:20 p.m. to October 20th at 4:20 a.m., the route between Offenbach Ost and Frankfurt Mühlberg will be completely closed. In order to keep affected commuters mobile, a rail replacement service (SEV) will be set up. The replacement bus routes are as follows:
- S1E: Offenbach Ost – Konstablerwache
- S2E: Offenbach-Zentrum Hauptbahnhof – Konstablerwache
- S8E: Offenbach Ost Ostbahnhof – Frankfurt Flughafen
- S9E: Offenbach Ost Ostbahnhof – Frankfurt Südbahnhof
Alternatives for commuters
Commuters who rely on alternative transportation should also consider the option of using bicycles. Bicycles from are available at five SEV stations in Offenbach nextbike ready, which can be borrowed free of charge for up to 30 minutes. Registration with RMVplus or nextbike is required.
In addition to the rail replacement transport measures, there will also be adjustments to bus and tram transport during the construction period. Tram line 15 will be extended to the Offenbach city limits from Monday to Friday, and bus line 103 will run every 15 minutes between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Please also note that the travel center at Offenbach-Marktplatz will be closed from October 5th to 19th.
The preliminary plans show that the construction work, although associated with restrictions, is necessary to improve the infrastructure for the future. Commuters should plan enough time for their journeys and use the alternative transport options available to get to their destination without any problems.
