The Serengeti Dieburg: A new home for rescued animals!

The “Serengeti Dieburg gUG” is well on its way to becoming a pioneering lighthouse project for animal protection in the region between Dieburg and Münster. The organization, which has been passionately committed to animal welfare for 35 years, purchased a five-hectare area in March 2023 to build a new dog house. The dog house, which is currently in the approval phase, will occupy an area of 275 square meters and will specifically provide a home for senior dogs. A further investment boost came from the Groß-Umstadt Lions Club, which generously provided 5,000 euros for start-up financing to advance the ambitious project. The project includes more than just a dog house; A variety of uses are planned as a sanctuary, animal shelter, wild animal sanctuary, learning farm and animal resting place.

There is a noticeable increase in animal welfare inquiries in the region, particularly for cats and various other animals. This shows how important the work of the Serengeti is to meet increasing needs. The Daktari rescue station near Roßdorf-Gundernhausen, also run by Tierfreunde Dieburg, complements the efforts to ensure a good life for the animals.

A place of meeting

Every Sunday from 2 p.m. the Serengeti opens its doors to visitors who are hosted for a donation. The operators are particularly happy about regular guests, including school classes, holiday play children and kindergartens. These opportunities not only offer the chance to learn more about animal welfare work, but also to get to know the animals and advocate for their well-being.

The Serengeti Dieburg will work closely with the local animal protection association, which acts as a contact point for animals in need. A wide variety of animals are adopted into the animal shelter, from dogs and cats to small animals and birds. The placement takes place in close cooperation with foster homes that offer animals a homely environment until they find a forever home. Responsibility for the animals' health falls on the shoulders of the new pet owners, with local veterinarians in Dieburg providing medical care.

Animal protection in the focus of society

The importance of animal protection has become more relevant for many people in recent years. In 2023, around 8.3 percent of private donations in Germany went to animal protection. A survey shows that many consumers would be willing to pay more for animal-welfare products, even if there are signs of confusion about food labels. Animal protection organizations such as PETA are important contacts for consumers who want to find out more about animal-friendly alternatives.

The pursuit of better animal welfare is inextricably linked to animal protection. Animal protection measures should therefore always take the needs of the animals into account, as the Farm Animal Welfare Council's five freedoms clearly show: freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from pain, freedom to develop species-specific behavior and more. Of course, given the intense debates surrounding animal husbandry and production, a clear definition of animal welfare can often be a challenge.

In all of these efforts, whether on a small scale at the animal shelter or in large projects like Serengeti Dieburg, the common goal is to have a positive impact on the lives of our animal companions and create a better future for them. The commitment of Tierfreunde Dieburg and other animal protection organizations is crucial.
