New S-Bahn era begins: construction work begins in Frankfurt!

The groundbreaking ceremony for the North Main S-Bahn took place in Frankfurt on July 11, 2025, a step that is important not only for the city but also for the entire region. The preparatory work is already underway and includes, among other things, overhead line work. However, these construction measures also bring challenges: The route between Frankfurt-Mainkur and Frankfurt-Süd is closed until July 18th. This means that commuters and travelers will have to make some changes to their everyday lives.

A replacement concept was developed by DB Regio and the Hessische Landesbahn in order to minimize the inconvenience for passengers as much as possible. The RB 58 runs every hour and during peak times even every half hour between Hanau Hbf and Frankfurt-Mainkur, until around 10 p.m. There is also a rail replacement service (SEV) with buses between Frankfurt-Mainkur and Frankfurt-Süd.

Special features of replacement transport

However, the diversion also brings with it restrictions: The RB 58 trains to and from Rüsselsheim Opelwerk are rerouted via Offenbach, while the RE 54 trains have additional stops in Offenbach. During the night, an SEV will be set up between Hanau Hbf and Frankfurt-Süd, but it is not possible to take bicycles on the buses. Passengers are asked to follow the directions on the platforms and the information on the site hlb-online.de to be noted.

The new construction measures are part of a larger infrastructure program launched by the federal government and Deutsche Bahn. It is the largest program to modernize the rail network since the railway reform in 1994. The aim is to improve the punctuality and quality of train traffic. Comprehensive renewals and renovations are planned on 40 sections of the route by 2030, with the highly stressed rail network area of 9,000 km also coming into focus. German railway and the federal government are investing up to 45 billion euros for this.

The comprehensive measures also include the expansion of routes to resolve existing bottlenecks and enable a rollout of the European Train Control System (ETCS). The program also aims to modernize train stations in order to transform them into sustainable hubs.

A look at the building history

Looking back on the past few months: March 14, 2025 was a significant date when steel pipes were instead spoken of as suitable materials - far from the idea of World War II bombs. The construction of the new bridge over the Salisbach was also successfully completed on February 27, 2025. A look back at the multitude of measures shows that there is a lot going on to continually improve the infrastructure and adapt it to the needs of a growing population. North Main S-Bahn documents these developments in detail and provides regular information about progress and challenges.

The current construction work and the associated changes require patience and understanding from passengers. But the long-term benefits of investing in rail infrastructure will hopefully soon be reflected in improved travel quality and punctuality for all rail travelers.
