Racing rivals in the Taunus: BMW and Audi are in a dangerous race!
On the B417 in Taunusstein last night the road was anything but usual. Two drivers, one behind the wheel of a dark BMW, the other in an Audi of the same color, engaged in an illegal car race that had dangerous consequences. These acts have recently increased in frequency and police warn of the consequences of such races, which have been considered a criminal offense since 2017 Tagesschau.de reported.
The two drivers overtook each other several times at risky speeds and endangered other road users. An accident then occurred around 8 p.m.: The BMW driver tried to avoid an uninvolved vehicle and crashed into oncoming traffic. The result: a damaged wheel on the oncoming vehicle and the car race quickly being stopped.
The escape and the search
In a moment of serious consequence, the BMW driver parked his car in a supermarket parking lot and tried to escape. An alert witness noticed this and tried to stop him, but was physically attacked and was just able to save himself. The police are now investigating and are looking for both the BMW driver and the Audi driver, who also got away.
The police are asking for information from the public to bring these incorrigible speeders to justice. Although fortunately there were no injuries in this particular incident, the dangers of illegal car racing should not be underestimated. In other cities such as Ludwigsburg there have already been fatal accidents in which innocent people were harmed SWR.de reported.
Serious penalties threaten
The penalties for such races can be severe. Participants and organizers of such car races face up to two years in prison, while in the event of injuries or even deaths, the penalties can rise to up to ten years. Speeders can also be held accountable for gross traffic violations. The laws are clear: Illegal car racing is a punishable offense, and the state can enforce vehicle safety up to and including confiscation, as the ADAC explains here.
The seriousness of these offenses becomes clear when you consider the drastic consequences and penalties that speeders can face. This was the case of a 20-year-old from Heilbronn who was sentenced to nine years in a youth prison for a fatal accident in 2022. The question arises: is it all worth it? The answer for many would be a resounding no.
The incident in Taunusstein is a painful reminder of how reckless some road users are and that it is high time we became aware of the consequences of this reckless behavior.
