In Edewecht, the “Abenteuerland” container daycare center is causing a stir – not only because of its modern care, but also because of unexpected cost increases. The local council will deal with this issue on June 30th, after the daycare center only opened in March.

The “Abenteuerland” daycare center, run by the Johanniter local association in Oldenburg, is currently intended as a temporary solution until a permanent family center can be built at the Astrid Lindgren elementary school. The construction of the new school building is crucial for the opening of the family center and should be completed by July 31, 2028 at the latest.

Causes of cost increases

The administration has identified several causes for the additional spending. These include, for example, the purchase of outdoor play equipment, which costs 76,000 euros. The new electrical supply and civil engineering work are also estimated at 37,000 euros. For an environmentally friendly improvement, the installation of air conditioning split units is recommended, which costs 37,000 euros and is intended to reduce annual energy costs to around 10,000 euros in the long term.

Other points that contributed to the increase in costs include:

The administration emphasizes that the investment in the container system - with a purchase price of 330,000 euros - is the cheapest solution compared to other variants, which would cost between 1.2 and 1.3 million euros.

The “Abenteuerland” daycare center in focus

With a creative concept, the Johanniter-Kita is committed to promoting the needs and interests of the children. Girls and boys are looked after in two groups, the “unicorns” and “dragons”. A third group is already planned for August 2025. The situational approach is used, which means that the children are actively involved in the organization of their everyday lives.

The aim of the facility is to create an atmosphere in which the children feel comfortable and can learn and grow through play. The focus is on individual support, creative projects and an appreciative community. The location at Loge 62 in Edewecht is modern and is intended to offer the children numerous opportunities to develop their talents.

The daycare center is also looking for committed educators (m/f/d) who would like to work part-time (22 – 25 hours per week) from August 1st, 2025. Caring for the children and planning for the coming years are in full bloom, and the challenges of unexpected costs don't seem to be dampening the good mood.
