Rasteder ultra runner Watzke: On the way to San Marino!

The starting signal for this year's event was given on August 3, 2025 Trans Europe Foot Race, an exciting adventure for ultra runners across Europe. One of the participants who is particularly committed is Martin Watzke from Rastede in Ammerland. The managing director of a chemical company has taken on this challenge and is tackling the route from Flensburg to San Marino with full force.

With a daily distance of up to 70 kilometers, usually an average of around six minutes per kilometer, Watzke is certainly no beginner. NDR reports that the ultrarunner spends the night in gyms after each stage, which gives him the advantage of securing a good place to sleep, as he has always finished third so far. In order to recover optimally, he uses a sleeping mask and ear plugs.

Hard preparation and daily routine

Since 2018, Watzke has discovered his passion for running, sparked by an invitation to an extreme obstacle course. Since then he has regularly taken part in marathons and extreme runs, including a demanding 24-hour run in Delmenhorst. His training routine requires him to get up at five o'clock every morning. Even in the mountains, he specifically trained his stamina and endurance.

The number of participants in this year's Trans Europe Foot Race shows the international appeal of this event: 13 runners come from Japan, with additional athletes from the USA, France and Sweden. A remarkable exchange can be felt among the athletes; Watzke particularly appreciates the solidarity and the conversations during the stages.

An exciting goal in mind

In total, the race includes 41 stages and an impressive total distance of 2,247 kilometers. The ultrarunners are determined to reach the finish in San Marino on September 12, 2025. Wikipedia shows that the Trans Europe Foot Race is a multi-day long-distance ultra march across Europe that has been held in various editions since 2003.

After completing the race, Watzke plans to return home to his family by train. An end to an adventure, the beginning of new challenges – this makes this competition unforgettable for all participants.
