Henni Balderhaar: First volunteer of the month in Grafschaft Bentheim!
Something very special is happening for volunteers in the Grafschaft Bentheim district! From July 2025, the new “Volunteership of the Month” format will be launched to make the valuable commitment of these people more visible. The first award went to the remarkable Henni Balderhaar from Neuenhaus. At 88 years old, she is an inspiring example of active and fulfilling volunteer work.
Henni Balderhaar not only organizes hiking tours and sports courses, but also works in retirement homes, where she spends valuable time with the residents. For her, her commitment is a “gift” that allows her to stay fit and experience the community more closely. “I have seven children!” she says beamingly as she talks about her life in Neuenhaus. The initiative for the award came from Antje Lütke-wenning, who describes Ms. Balderhaar as a role model.
Honors with heart
Congratulations on the first honor were presented by Gert Lödden, head of the social affairs department, and Mareike Bölle, head of the engagement promotion department. With this “Volunteer of the Month” initiative, those responsible in the district want to strengthen the culture of recognition for volunteers and at the same time put individuals in the spotlight who are committed to the common good. Almost 40% of residents are already involved in voluntary work and thus contribute to the diverse range of social activities.
One person is honored every month; suggestions can be submitted online using a form, with the staff office making the relevant decision. This makes the award generally accessible: regardless of age, duration or area of activity, all proposals can be submitted, even for project-related commitment. It is important that the commitment takes place without financial compensation.
The diversity of volunteering
Volunteering is not just a buzzword, but a central part of our society. More and more people are coming together in different areas, be it in sports clubs, the volunteer fire department or in church organizations. According to Statista, around 86,000 sports clubs and over a million people volunteer in the fire department nationwide. Internationally, Volunteer Day is celebrated on December 5th, further underlining the appreciation for this essential work.
The Grafschaft Bentheim district's new format is a wonderful opportunity to promote recognition for all those who make a significant contribution to society without pay. If you know someone who has what it takes to be Volunteer of the Month, don't hesitate to submit a nomination! Information about this can be found on the district website. The volunteer agency is also ready to offer support.
The first award winners are presented on the district's social media channels on the 5th of each month. This not only increases the visibility of volunteering, but also encourages the community to support each other and learn how important this commitment is.
