Prayer and brotherhood: Hildesheim celebrates 65 years of caring for one another in Sucre

On September 30, 2025, a special week of prayer to promote fraternity between the German churches of the dioceses of Hildesheim and Trier and the Bolivian Church was inaugurated in the Archdiocese of Sucre. These celebrations mark the 65th anniversary of the relationship between Hildesheim and the Bolivian Church. The inaugural Mass took place in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sucre and was presided over by Archbishop Mons. Ricardo Centella, who warmly welcomed the faithful from various ecclesiastical jurisdictions present.

Archbishop Centella reflected on the importance of fraternity and Christian solidarity, especially for those in need in society. The Mass was also attended by Msgr. Adolfo Bittschi, the auxiliary bishop of Sucre, as well as other priests from various regions of Bolivia took part. The solemn occasion was further enriched by the memorial day of the archangels San Gabriel, San Rafael and San Miguel. In the Archdiocese of Sucre, the Virgin of Guadalupe is the patron saint, while San Miguel Arcángel is venerated as the second patron.

Festive activities and highlights

Various activities took place throughout the week aimed at celebrating the solidarity and brotherhood between the sister churches. Another highlight is the central celebration, which will take place on Thursday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in the Primate Cathedral. This Eucharist is led by Msgr. Jesús Pérez, Bishop Emeritus of Sucre. At this celebration, visitors can look forward to the Permanent College of Bishops as well as numerous priests, deacons and seminarians.

The subsequent youth celebration in the courtyard of the San Cristóbal Seminary will be particularly exciting, accompanied by musical performances from the capital's parishes. This celebration offers an excellent opportunity to deepen the bonds of friendship within the Church and to encourage the active participation of parishes and ecclesial movements.

Interreligious dialogue and community

Such initiatives are not only the basis for a strong Christian community, but they are also in line with the efforts for interreligious dialogue promoted by various church bodies. An example of this is the “Jews and Christians” discussion group, founded in 1971, which encourages exchange on important theological and political questions and which still addresses topics that are relevant today. The dialogue about the relationship between Christians and Jews attracts a lot of interest today and is intensively pursued in numerous social projects as well as in education. The focus here is particularly on religious instruction and adult education, making education about old and new forms of anti-Semitism an important educational goal.

This week of prayer not only brings together the members of the different dioceses, but also reminds us of the importance of strengthening the bonds between the different faith communities and taking responsibility for one another seriously.
