Low water threatens the Elbe ferry: Tanja will be out of service from Monday!
The Elbe is currently causing worry lines for the passengers of the Elbe ferry “Tanja”. From Monday, August 17, 2025, the popular ferry connection will have to stop operating due to increasing low water levels. According to NDR this is not a new situation, as the “Tanja” has already had to contend with operational interruptions several times this year.
The Lüneburg district has informed the public about the temporary disruption to transport options. District Councilor Rainer Müller expresses his regret about the circumstances, which particularly affect commuters and students who rely on the ferry to get to school or work.
A replacement is on the way
However, students who have to go to the school center in Bleckede are taken care of: replacement buses from bus route 508 are available to transport those affected. The responsible legal guardians and students are expressly requested to check the ferry connections before departure in order to avoid misunderstandings. Finally, the “Amt Neuhaus” ferry between Bleckede and Neu Bleckede will continue to operate regularly and ensures that some connections remain in place despite the difficulties.
In July, the “Tanja” was in the shipyard for weeks to have repairs carried out. After she returned to Neu Darchau, everything seemed to be going according to plan again, but the repeated low water levels are now causing problems for the ferry again. It remains to be seen how long the disruption to operations will last and whether weather-related changes can be better predicted in the future.
A look at the weather forecast could help create more transparency in the future. After all, citizens don't just face challenges when it comes to crossing the Elbe in summer. For now, all that remains is to rely on the alternatives provided while the Elbe ferry “Tanja” treats itself to a well-deserved break.
