On August 9, 2025, a shoe store on Schuhstrasse in Sudheim was the target of multiple property damage. Unknown perpetrators destroyed the glass front doors with stones. The Northeim police station estimates the property damage at around 800 euros and has initiated an investigation. The crime happened between 1:50 p.m. on Saturday and 8:40 a.m. on Monday. But the property damage is not the only incident worrying the region. In a series of burglaries that occurred last week, the reported HNA of total damages that amount to over 20,000 euros. In several cases, including an attempted break-in into an apartment building on Hintere Strasse, only property damage was caused, while in other cases valuable items were stolen. A Pedelec worth around 2,600 euros and several e-bikes worth 15,000 euros are just some of the stolen items. What is also frightening is the fact that burglars were able to break into a retirement home and steal a spray can, which significantly questioned the state of security in the region.

Rising crime in focus

The crime situation is not new, as a look at the burglary statistics shows alarming trends. After statistics 77,819 residential burglaries were registered nationwide in 2023, which corresponds to an increase of around 18 percent compared to the previous year. In North Rhine-Westphalia in particular, which includes Sudheim, there was an increase of 15 percent. This means that an average of 213 burglaries are recorded every day. The perpetrators mostly consist of occasional and spontaneous perpetrators.

Statistically speaking, the average damage per burglary is around 3,500 euros. The experts also found that 47 percent of burglary attempts are unsuccessful. This means that the perpetrators often fail due to mechanical security measures. Preventative protective measures are important here, and the police recommend locking devices and alarm systems to strengthen citizens' sense of security.

Given these developments, it is clear that security in Sudheim and the entire region must be taken seriously. Personal security advice from the police could be valuable support for many residents in order to better protect their four walls.
