Major fire in Wardenburg: Thousands of chickens die due to technical defect!
A dramatic major fire hit a laying hen farm in Wardenburg in the Oldenburg district last Sunday. Loud NDR The fire was probably due to a technical defect in the poultry house. The police ruled out foul play and the total damage is estimated at around 1.5 million euros.
Unfortunately, thousands of animals died in the fire; Only around 2,000 of a total of 20,000 hens survived. The surviving animals were immediately taken to an outbuilding while the fire broke out on Saarländer Weg shortly before 8 a.m. The owner noticed the flames and alerted the fire department, who were on site with over 100 firefighters.
Rescue attempts and firefighting work
Although the fire department was able to bring the fire under control in about an hour, the affected building could no longer be saved. The extinguishing work was particularly difficult due to a photovoltaic system on the roof, which posed additional risks. Due to the enormous smoke, residents were warned to keep their windows and doors closed and to turn off air conditioning.
The fire department also appealed to citizens to keep the access routes to the fire site clear. Fortunately, there were no injuries, which is a small ray of hope in such a catastrophic situation.
Comparison to other incidents
A similar incident occurred on June 25, 2025 in Bad Fallingbostel, where 14,500 laying hens perished in a stable that was completely destroyed due to a fire. The material damage there amounted to around two million euros, and the fire produced massive columns of smoke that led to traffic delays on the A7. In this case too, no people were injured, but the exact number of surviving animals could not be determined because it was not possible to enter the stable for examinations ( HNA ).
These incidents raise fundamental questions about farm safety and highlight the challenges farmers face. It is to be hoped that the causes will be investigated quickly and comprehensively to prevent future tragedies.
