Record number of visitors at Bundeswehr Day: Bückeburg in a state of emergency!

On June 30, 2025, tens of thousands of people in Germany experienced an exciting day as the nationwide “Bundeswehr Day” took place again. This year the event was a complete success and attracted over 280,000 visitors, which is a new record. This is around 45,000 more than last year, as the Website of the German Bundeswehr Association reported. Since its launch in 2015, the event, also known as the open day, has aimed to provide insights into the German armed forces and promote dialogue between the military and society.

In Lower Saxony, the Bückeburg and Garlstedt locations opened their doors. At the army airfield in Bückeburg, army pilots impressed with a breathtaking flight program that included helicopters, fighter jets and transport aircraft such as the light attack helicopter H145M, the A400M transport aircraft and the Eurofighter NDR reported. On the ground, visitors were able to view current tanks and military vehicles and even climb into some of the vehicles.

Entertainment and information for every age group

The exhibition area of the Special Forces Command (KSK), which attracted a lot of attention in Bückeburg, was particularly impressive. Two shows also took place in Garlstedt between the attractions. A grandstand with 3,000 seats was built here to present the exciting performances to as many visitors as possible. At the logistics school in Garlstedt there were numerous interactive stations that aroused interest in the diverse career opportunities in the Bundeswehr.

Brigadier General Holger Draber highlighted the great popularity of the Bundeswehr and pointed out the newly established “Career Mile”, where those interested could find out more about the Bundeswehr as an employer. There were over 250 exhibits on site, including impressive helicopters and tanks, which invited visitors to view them. The Navy in particular issued a rigid-hull inflatable boat, Buster, which had previously been incorrectly referred to as a speedboat, Duster.

The view of the future

As in the past, “Bundeswehr Day” is also a platform to make connections to society visible and to debunk clichés about the Bundeswehr. The feedback from visitors was consistently positive, and the number of participants shows that public interest in the Bundeswehr remains high. Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul were also present at various locations during the event to get an idea of the troops' activities.

The Bundeswehr is looking forward to its next challenges. On July 1, 2025, 21 marching groups will be active in the city, accompanied by a colorful supporting program. Residents must be prepared that around 500 vehicles will be in use, which is likely to lead to significant traffic delays. In addition, noise is expected as attack helicopter pilots conduct their exercises. A ship carrying around 200 soldiers, which had been on an Indo-Pacific mission since May, docked in its home port today.

The “Bundeswehr Day” is not only an exciting event, but also an opportunity for many to find out about the diverse career opportunities and technologies of the Bundeswehr. It will be interesting to see how this traditional event will develop in the coming years.
