Operation marathon in Achim: theft, fraud and garage fire!

Things are currently getting turbulent in Achim and Oyten. On Tuesday evening there were several operations by the police, fire brigade and emergency services that caused excitement among residents. A 19-year-old man stole several bottles of spirits from a supermarket in Achim and got into a physical altercation with the store's employees. When staff tried to stop him, he tried to hit a woman but failed to hit her. There was a scuffle in the parking lot in which the perpetrator attacked another employee with the bottles, as the district newspaper reports.

The police were quickly able to catch the young man at close range and take him to the office in Achim. In this context, the question arises: What happens if someone uses violence when stealing? According to Section 252 of the Criminal Code, this is a robbery that can result in a prison sentence of up to 15 years. In order to secure possession of the stolen goods, violence is used against people or threats are made, which makes the situation all the more serious. Advice from a lawyer is advisable in such cases.

Fraud and break-ins shake the community

But it wasn't just the supermarket incident that caused a stir. There was also a serious case of fraud in Oyten, in which an 84-year-old woman was duped into accessing her personal data. An alleged bank employee convinced the lady to reveal her PIN. An accomplice snatched the card from the woman under the pretext of having to check the debit card and immediately withdrew money from her account. Police are strongly warning against sharing personal information over the phone and are calling on witnesses to come forward.

In addition, there were several break-ins in vans in Achim, in which high-quality tools worth several thousand euros were stolen. Here too, the police rely on information from witnesses in order to track down the perpetrators.

Garage fire and injuries

On Tuesday night, a garage fire in Oyten heated up emotions. The fire broke out on Schafköben Street for reasons that are still unclear, resulting in minor injuries to twelve residents of the adjacent building. Two affected people had to be taken to hospital for treatment. The fire brigade arrived quickly and was able to extinguish the fire quickly, resulting in only minor damage to the building. The investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.

The accumulation of such incidents sheds light on the development of crime in Germany, which has experienced an overall decline in recent years, but cannot reduce the fears and worries of citizens. According to police crime statistics, there was a decrease of 1.7% to around 5.84 million crimes in 2024. Nevertheless, many sections of the population have the feeling that safety in everyday life is compromised. Statistics show that theft and fraud are the most common crimes, and even the decline in cannabis crimes since partial legalization has not stopped the increase in other crimes.

Police in Achim and Oyten are working hard to protect the community and encourage citizens to be vigilant and report suspicious activity. Especially in these turbulent times, solidarity between neighbors is more important than ever.
