Fascination with horses: Hartmut Hellner's impressive works in Verden!

A remarkable exhibition is currently running in the German Horse Museum (DPM) in the charming town of Verden: “Painting Horses” by the Hamburg painter Hartmut Hellner. This impressive show can be viewed until November 16, 2025 and offers art lovers the opportunity to admire around 40 fascinating works.

A highlight of this exhibition is that around half of the images shown were created specifically for her. Hellner, 61 years old, has earned an international reputation as a horse painter. His images capture the “horse personalities” in a distinctive style and convey power, dynamism, elegance, emotions and depth. “For the first time, the DPM is presenting horse paintings without a historical background,” says the artist happily, who emphasizes that the eyes of the horses are particularly important to him in his work. He paints these with a meticulousness that captivates the viewer.

Unique insights into the creative process

The exhibition was originally intended to be a smaller cabinet exhibition. But the enthusiasm for the large-format works led to the expansion of the project, which shows how popular Hellner's art is. The opening ceremony took place for the anniversary exhibition “Fascination of Horses – German Horse Museum 2.0”, which was a great success and only increased the anticipation of Hellner's work.

Hellner's career is also interesting. He has no equestrian background, but came into contact with horses at an early age through his parents. After studying graphic design in Hamburg and a career as a graphic artist, he finally concentrated on painting and has been painting horses, but also dogs and cats, for around ten years. His technique is as unique as it is convincing: after a black and white initial version, layers of color follow, which bring his works to life.

Supporting program worth visiting

So if you're looking for an artistic break, you shouldn't miss this exhibition. In addition to the fascinating art, the German Horse Museum also has other exciting program items and events. Art and horses in harmonious unity – this is really good business for the senses.
