B211 closed: Major diversions and patience required in Wesermarsch!

There is currently a lot of work being done on the B211 in the region around Oldenburg and Barghorn, which is why the road will not be passable for the coming weeks. How NWZonline reported, the renovation work started on Monday and is the second full closure of the B211 this year. The asphalt is milled immediately so that the road is ready for traffic again later. The plan is for everything to be completed by November 13th.

At the same time, work is also underway on the B211 near Großenmeer. This means a significant diversion, especially for commuters and travelers using the route. The official diversion leads from Oldenburg-Ohmstede via state road 865 to Elsfleth and from there on the B212 to Brake. The towns of Jaderberg and Varel have already seen an increase in traffic volume, which further complicates the situation.

Detours and traffic flow

The diversion measures initially appear to be working well, although there may still be traffic jams at the closure points. According to Inka Bodmann, spokeswoman for the state authority for road construction and traffic, the security guards are placed at the end points of the full closures in order to direct traffic as efficiently as possible. Meanwhile, the state authority for road construction and traffic depends on the patience of drivers as the work could not be avoided.

Another reason for the extensive construction work on the B211 is the long-running infrastructure renovations. In a broader context, work is also being done on dilapidated roads and bridges in the rest of Lower Saxony. NDR points out that the state government plans to invest heavily in the renovation of more than 4,800 bridges over several years. This is necessary because many of the bridges have not been renewed since the 1950s and are no longer able to cope with the increased loads.

Future construction projects

The Economics and Transport Minister of Lower Saxony, Grant Hendrik Tonne, expects a massive wave of construction sites to arrive in the next few years and could put the patience of road users to a severe test. The situation is particularly critical for ten percent of the bridges in the Göttingen district, which are in inadequate condition. Tonne emphasized how important it is to carefully plan construction sites in order to keep the burden on road users as low as possible.

Planning details and other measures are also involved in the redesign of the B211 / L864 intersection in Barghorn, where demolition work for the bridge structure is already underway. This construction work began on July 3rd and should definitely be combined with the improvement of the bus stops and cycle paths. A traffic light system will also be installed here in the future to increase safety at this busy intersection. Lower Saxony appeals to road users for their patience during these measures.

The coming weeks promise to continue to be noisy on the B211, and commuters from the region are well advised to find out about alternative routes and closely monitor the current traffic situation. A good hand when choosing a route could more than pay off!
