Outdoor art: Findling in Barkel becomes a unique station!

In Barkel, on Langsamstrasse, an old boulder becomes a new work of art: the artist Joshua Zielinski has artistically processed the unique stone, which comes from the last Ice Age and was discovered during construction work. This was done in cooperation with the Wilhelmshaven Art Gallery, whose director Petra Stegmann is always looking for creative ways to bring art outdoors. The boulder is located at the end of Slow Street, which leads to the popular Café Suutje.

The stone had been lying completely unnoticed for the past few years before the idea of changing it artistically arose during a walk in the Barkeler Busch. The work of art bears the inscription “ABUNDZUWANDERN”, which allows for different interpretations and stimulates thought. Margret Finkenstädt and her husband Peter, who live in the area, are particularly pleased with the artistic enrichment of Langsamstrasse.

An experience for the senses

The new work of art will soon be part of the exhibition “All good things are wild and free”, which also focuses on movement in nature, slowness and personal and communal experiences. This one from the Wilhelmshaven Art Gallery Organized exhibition celebrates the direct experience of the vastness of the landscape and the limits of one's own body while hiking, pilgrimage and walking. It shows works by well-known artists such as Marina Abramović, Richard Long and Till Gerhard.

With free entry to this event, organized by the Association of Art Friends for Wilhelmshaven e. V. and the East Frisia Biennale e. V. is supported, there is a unique opportunity to combine art and nature.

Interactive elements

Interested visitors can collect stamps, which are available in small booklets, at various stations around the art gallery. One of these stations is the boulder on Langsamstrasse, whose stamp is available in the “Schlauer Pilz”, which is located opposite. In this way, art and movement can be linked together in a playful way.

Café Suutje is open on weekends and offers a lovely place to enjoy the artwork after a walk in the area. However, the station itself can be visited at any time, so art lovers and nature enthusiasts alike will get their money's worth.
