New reconstruction of Kreuzstrasse in Bielefeld: traffic chaos threatens again!

Kreuzstrasse in Bielefeld is once again causing a stir. The reconstruction of this important traffic artery could cause renewed traffic chaos. In the last few days it became known that Kreuzstrasse was recently completely closed due to urgent construction work. The new construction project is intended to make structural adjustments to the light rail system on line 1 in order to create space for the new Vamos trains. How nw.de reported, the overhead line masts will now be moved from the middle of the road to their side position. But cyclists don't miss out either: cycling traffic will be reorganized, with the narrow cycle paths remaining, while the main cycle traffic will in future be routed via Hans-Sachs-Straße.

It looks like Hans-Sachs-Straße will be expanded into a bicycle street for both directions. These restructurings also come at a price. According to the current plans, around 36 parking spaces will be eliminated on Kreuzstrasse and an additional 38 on Hans-Sachs-Strasse. In addition, Kreuzstrasse will remain four lanes to accommodate the high volume of traffic. A concrete start to the construction phase is not expected until 2028, while details on the duration and possible diversions have yet to be announced.

Urgent shaft renovation from March 26th

But that's not the only issue that's currently bothering local residents. In mid-March it was determined that the shaft structure on Kreuzstrasse was in urgent need of renovation. The renovation work will begin on Wednesday, March 26th and is expected to last eight weeks. This work is only possible by closing the two lanes in the direction of the regional court, which is known to lead to noticeable traffic disruptions. Unfortunately, an alternative implementation is not possible. The condition of the structure has noticeably deteriorated over the past winter, like that Bielefeld municipal utilities communicates.

In order to reduce the traffic load, a single-lane traffic system has been in place since March 13th. Tragically, light rail traffic on Kreuzstrasse remains unaffected, and security of supply can still be guaranteed. During construction work there may be phases without visible construction activity; However, release for traffic remains excluded. Traffic will be rerouted via various streets, such as Artur-Ladebeck-Straße, Obernstraße and Waldhof. Heavy goods traffic will also be routed via diversions.

More focus on urban development in the future

In order to avoid such a situation in the future, national urban development projects are being discussed throughout Germany that pursue special quality standards and innovation potential. These projects aim to solve urban development tasks of considerable financial importance and were funded by the federal government. national-staedtebauprojekte.de already outlines various funded projects that could offer solutions to similar urban development challenges.

In summary, it can be said that the coming months will be challenging for Bielefeld's traffic situation. Nevertheless, there is hope for an improvement in the infrastructure, which can bring about a sensible reorganization for both cyclists and drivers. Let's stay tuned to see how the situation will develop and whether the necessary renovation work can be completed soon.
