Pioneers of Europe: Exhibition shows women who made history!

In the exciting world of politics and equality, a new exhibition sends a strong signal for the role of women in Europe. The #EUwomen exhibition, which is on loan from the Bremen Senate Chancellery, opened its doors in Cologne today. It was created by the European department of Bremen's representative at the federal level and for Europe and is supported by the representation of the EU Commission in Germany. Dortmund.de reports that the exhibition honors women who have played a key role in the vision of a united Europe.

Visitors can look forward to an innovative presentation that includes short biographies and quotes from these impressive women. Particularly interesting are the information boards, which are designed in the form of voting booths and address the topic of voting rights as a fundamental citizen participation. Colorful legs with the socks of the respective national flags are also visible under stools, symbolizing the diversity of the EU with its 27 member states. Coincidentally, the eyes fall on the Brexit country Great Britain, which is presented rather grayed out.

Women in politics

The exhibition is not only intended to inspire, but also to draw attention to the current situation of equality in politics. According to the latest figures from the European Parliament, the can be read here, the proportion of women in the European Parliament is now 40%. This is a notable increase compared to the first directly elected years, when the proportion was only 15.9%. However, it is noteworthy that the proportion of women fell to 38.5% after the European elections in 2024 and will be around 38.7% in 2025.

In terms of content, the exhibition is also dedicated to political initiatives for equality and shows that, despite progress, there are still fewer women than men in politics and public life. Femininity in the highest offices of the European Commission and the European Central Bank is a positive signal, but the road to full equality remains long.

A roadmap for the future

In order to further advance gender equality in Europe, the European Commission presented a roadmap for women's rights in spring 2025. In this document, on this is referenced here, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen makes a clear statement: equal pay and combating violence against women are essential. The roadmap aims to reduce structural discrimination and ensure that women are equally represented in all areas, including political participation.

This presentation also reports that one in three women in the EU suffers physical or sexual violence - an alarming statistic that highlights the importance of this roadmap. The EU has made progress over the last five years, but the 2024 Gender Equality Index shows that there is still room for improvement at 71 out of 100 possible points.

The #EUwomen exhibition in Cologne aims to draw attention to these issues and encourage more female influence in society. If you are interested, you can contact us directly at clawrence@stadtdo.de if you have any questions about the exhibition.
