During the traditional fireworks display, a dramatic incident occurred when at least one firecracker flew into the crowd and exploded there. According to Bild, a total of 19 people were injured, four of them seriously. Particularly tragic: a child was among the injured.
The accident happened in the area of the Rhine knee bridge and Rhine meadows, where, according to eyewitness reports, the fireworks detonated too low. Surprised onlookers reported at least two rockets flying sideways into the crowd, clearly no ordinary display. Some bullets even fell into the water, while two rockets detonated in the air. The fire department confirmed that several rockets were misdirected and that a pressure wave from the explosion was also felt on the opposite side of the Rhine.
Rescue measures and initial reactions
The emergency services were quickly on the scene. Large numbers of fire brigade, rescue services and police were already on site and provided immediate support. Passersby also helped tend to the injured and transport them to area hospitals, where many were treated for burn injuries. To avoid panic, it was decided to continue the fireworks display for a few minutes despite the incident. A thick, black cloud of smoke drifted over the Rhine and left many of those present with an uneasy feeling.
The police have started investigating the exact cause of the accident and are currently assuming it was a tragic accident. According to Andreas-Paul Stieber, the shooting chief and co-organizer of the event, a tipped-over launch ramp could possibly have led to the failed launches. “It is important to comprehensively clarify the reasons for such an incident,” emphasizes Stieber.
Future of the Rhine fair
In view of this incident, the organizer has decided to end the fair early.
