Duisburg is pedaling strongly: 473,000 km at city cycling 2025!
On October 7th, 2025, city cycling in Duisburg will come to an end with impressive results. A total of 2,255 cyclists in 158 teams cycled an incredible 473,068 km. This exceeded the record from 2023. Duisburg comes in 21st place among districts and large cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants. This means an average of 0.93 km per resident, which shows that many citizens actively pedal. However, Duisburg only ranks 2,678th out of around 3,000 participating municipalities and districts nationwide. Smaller cities in the region were able to boast better rankings.
The city cycling campaign, which took place from May 26 to June 15, 2025, had the goal of covering everyday life with the bike. Many municipalities were called to “cycle” as many kilometers as possible. This initiative is not only a way to reduce CO2 emissions caused by motorized traffic, but also contributes to the general health and the well-being of the participants. High CO2 emissions are particularly incurred by the cycling of up to six kilometers, which can be reduced by cycling, which gives the initiative even more momentum. [Walluf] reports that the campaign in Walluf was started with Mayor Nikolaos Stavridis and other participants.
Events and community
During the city cycling, the ADFC Duisburg offered a variety of events that strengthened the local cycling community. From the opening bat tour to the Ruhrpott tour of the Karmariders to the Night-Ride with 42 participants: there was something for every cyclist inside. The 42nd Duisburg cycling hike, in which about 2,000 participants, struggled on routes of 26 and 64 km. Here the event contributed around 100,000 km to the total output.
The team "Traffic turn now!" Impressed with a particularly high output of 22,098 km and secured first place. The "Open Team Duisburg" followed at 19,339 km, while the community primary school in Mevissenstrasse reached the third highest number of kilometers with 17,919 km and the strongest team with 149 participants. The performance of the “The Ultra -Schnellen Helde”, which, with only five participants: inside, rated 680 km with only five participants.
The way to less CO2
The city cycling pursues a clear goal: reducing CO2 emissions by promoting cycling. According to information from [Radsport-Wulff], around 140 grams of fewer emissions can be generated per person kilometer compared to a car. With the help of political support and investments in the cycling infrastructure, such as wider bike paths and safe storage options, cycling should become even more attractive in the future. These collective efforts not only contribute to improving air quality, but also promoting the sense of community among fellow citizens: inside.
The success of the city cycling impressively shows that many Cologne residents are ready to make their contribution to the environment. Even if Duisburg has a challenge, the progress that the city has made this year is remarkable and a step in the right direction.
