Federal government criticizes new settlement construction in the West Bank!
The Federal Government has taken a clear position in the current political discussions surrounding the Middle East conflict. It rejects Israeli plans to build around 3,400 new housing units in the West Bank. A spokesman for the Foreign Office explained that this settlement construction violates international law and the resolutions of the UN Security Council. This also makes it more difficult to negotiate a two-state solution and end the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. The announcement by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to push ahead with this development in the sensitive E1 area between East Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement is causing additional discontent.
Area E1 is a critical point in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. The implementation of the construction plans could not only divide the West Bank into two parts, but also significantly hinder the creation of a contiguous Palestinian state. In addition, Smotrich has also threatened to annex the West Bank if a Palestinian state is recognized. The Federal Government makes it clear that it firmly rejects such annexation plans and furthermore that changes to the borders that exist until June 4, 1967 will only be recognized by mutual agreement.
An unmistakable challenge
These developments highlight the complex relationship between Israel and the Palestinians. Since the capture of the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the Six-Day War in 1967, over 700,000 settlers have lived there among around three million Palestinians, further complicating the situation. The international community has largely agreed that the settlements are illegal under international law, and the German government is calling on the Israeli side to immediately stop settlement construction.
On a completely different front, the Copa Libertadores is causing excitement. These renowned football games, which started on August 12th, not only bring fans together in South America, but also keep the media busy. Six Brazilian clubs are fighting in the Oitavas de final for a place in the next rounds of the international championship. Teams like Flamengo and Internacional face each other directly, which makes for exciting games. The grand finale is scheduled for November 29th at the Estádio Monumental in Lima, Peru.
