Safe travel for fourth graders: cycling test at St. Johannes School!
On Thursday, July 3, 2025, an exciting challenge awaits the fourth graders at St. Johannes Elementary School in Greffen: the cycling test. This important exam will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The students have prepared intensively and are now well prepared to drive independently in traffic. Drivers are asked to drive with particular caution and respect the right of way of young cyclists. For better visibility, the children wear eye-catching high-visibility vests with their race numbers to navigate safely through traffic.
The cycling test is, above all, an important stage for children, as they participate independently and actively in road traffic for the first time as soon as they get on the bike. As the German Statutory Accident Insurance explains on its website, cycling training in Germany is carried out nationwide from the third grade onwards. The students not only acquire knowledge about how to equip a bicycle to be safe for traffic, but also learn the most important traffic signs and the right-of-way rule “right before left”. As part of comprehensive traffic education, the children not only develop their technical skills, but also social and methodological skills through teamwork and presentations.
Preparation and support
Collaboration between teachers and parents plays a crucial role, especially when preparing for exams. The correct knowledge about road safety and the requirements for a road-safe bicycle is discussed in many schools. The students have the opportunity to check their own bike and learn which components are necessary to be safe on the road. Teaching materials and digital test sheets support the training and complement the theoretical lessons, as the German Statutory Accident Insurance reports.
The ADAC also provides extensive media for traffic education, which offers schools, parents and children further support. On their website you will find exercise sheets on traffic rules and safety instructions that will help children find their way around traffic better. The bicycle booklet also offers tips on topics such as how to wear a bicycle helmet correctly and blind spots. The ADAC information is a valuable resource to further improve children's road safety.
Call for consideration
The upcoming cycling test in Greffen is not only a personal challenge for the students, but also an appeal to all road users. The Gütersloh police emphasize the importance of being considerate and friendly on the streets, especially when children are on the road. It is up to all of us to create a safe space for our little road users and to give them a smooth start to their exciting adventures on two wheels. Whether on foot or by car, safety comes first and we can all help make the road a pleasant and safe place for everyone.
