The digital strategy of the Heinsberg district is already showing great success and will soon be presented to the district council. The strategy, which was launched in 2019 by the CDU and FDP parliamentary groups, aims to make citizens, business and administration fit for the digital future. A new service portal enables citizens to conveniently process numerous district administration applications and services online. Digitalized systems also promote inter-municipal cooperation, making decision-making processes more efficient. The expansion of IT in the district's schools is particularly positive, as it supports individual learning and better prepares students for the demands of the world of work.
Advances in infrastructure
A central element of the digital strategy is the expansion of a high-performance telecommunications infrastructure. Around 73% of all properties in the Heinsberg district already have access to high-speed internet. The expansion is being carried out in collaboration with Deutsche Glasfaser Wholesale GmbH and Deutsche Telekom AG. The goal is to provide all households with at least 30 Mbit/s by mid-2026. What is particularly pleasing is that over 90% of the properties in the district already have access to fast fiber optic internet or will have access to it in the short term. The expansion is taking place under the “White Spots” project, which ensures that underserved addresses are provided with fiber optic infrastructure. The Heinsberg district has acquired funding of around 34.73 million euros to further advance digitalization. The first start of construction was in August 2022. The current status of the work shows that a large part of the infrastructure has already been built in various cities in the district.
Use of artificial intelligence
The digital strategy also relies on the use of artificial intelligence. For example, language and translation devices are used in immigration authorities to facilitate communication. These valuable digital tools help to increase the quality of service provided by the administration and strengthen the competitiveness of the regional economy.
