Germany disappoints: only one restaurant in the top 50 in the world!

A look at Germany's culinary landscape shows that, despite an impressive number of Michelin stars, our home country's gourmet performance cannot quite compete with the world's top competitors. Loud Radio Herford Only one German restaurant achieved a place in the top 50 of the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025”. The three-star restaurant “Jan” in Munich was just able to secure 50th place.

The gala announcing the rankings took place on June 19, 2025 in Turin, Italy and is the 23rd edition of this prestigious ranking, which has been compiled since 2002 by over 1,000 gastronomy experts from around the world. This list includes not just 50, but a total of 100 excellent restaurants, and Germany tends to be in the shadows compared to other nations.

World-class restaurants in competition

The best restaurants in the world are spectacular this year: “Maido” in Lima, Peru, was named the best restaurant in the world, replacing “Disfrutar” in Barcelona. In second place we find “Asador Etxebarri” in Atxondo, Spain, followed by “Quintonil” in Mexico City in third place. The renowned “Steirereck” in Vienna, under the direction of chef Heinz Reitbauer, achieved a respectable 17th place, showing that Austrian cuisine continues to be very popular.

In the German capital, however, there is not much good going on: the two Berlin restaurants “Tim Raue” and “Nobelhart & Dirtig” have fallen out of the top 50 and are slipping to places 58 and 59. Another Berlin restaurant, “Coda”, also suffered and fell from 62nd place to 79th place.

An unfortunate outcome for Germany

This shows that competition in top-class restaurants is tougher than ever. On the other hand, the restaurants in Germany that enjoy the stars of the Michelin Guide can count themselves lucky. Top hotel reports that there are currently a record number of Michelin stars: 77 restaurants have been awarded a Green Star for sustainability. There is a clear movement towards environmentally conscious behavior and regional cuisine.

Originally published in 1910 to help motorists on their travels, the Michelin Guide has transformed over the years into a symbol of culinary excellence. This also shows that the quality of gastronomic offerings in Germany has increased in recent years, even if the number of award-winning restaurants has declined. 27 restaurants saw their stars decline, often due to closures or concept changes.

Overall, Germany's gastronomic scene remains in flux. While the global culinary rankings give German restaurants little concern, the increased number of Michelin stars shows that there are also restaurants in this country that have a good hand and cook to a high standard. It remains to be hoped that the next few years will bring Germany back among the top places in international competition.
