Herner Basketball Women: Heart check-up before the new season!

The HTC Herne women's basketball team recently took an important step towards their new playing season. On September 29, 2025, Dr. Ali Halboos, head of cardiology at the Evangelical Hospital (EvK), took four of the team's players for a comprehensive cardio check-up. This examination ensures that the athletes are in top shape before the season really gets started. The Evangelical Hospital not only supports the women's team as a sponsor, but also ensures the health care of its players.

The players who underwent the check-up are Olga Trzeciak, Julia Niemojewska, Kasey Kidwell and Sona Svetlikova. They were accompanied by team doctor Dr. Patrick Seidl and assistant coach Predrag Stanoscic. Dr. Halboos emphasizes the importance of health for sporting performance and points out that such annual examinations are essential. After all, it's not without reason that the HTC basketball women have an impressive record: They became German champions in 2019 and German cup winners in 2022 and are very popular in the Bundesliga.

Important role of health

The health of the players is considered crucial to their performance. Administrative director Danh Vu of the EvK emphasizes that team spirit is of great importance both in sport and in everyday hospital life. “Good team dynamics are important not only for success on the field, but also for collaboration in the hospital,” says Vu. The Evangelical Hospital is part of the EVA Ruhr network and takes its role as a backing support for the Herner basketball club seriously.

In addition, a current study by Prof. Dr. med. Martin Halle, published in the journal Nature Medicine, recommends physical training as an effective measure for the prevention and treatment of heart failure. Such findings underline the need for female athletes to have their health checked regularly in order to be optimally prepared for their demanding sporting challenges.

Dr. Halle is not only known for his studies, but also as a guest on the cardio podcast “KardioBeat”, where he talks about lifestyle changes and important factors for cardiovascular prevention. These insights do not only apply to basketball players, but are of interest to many people who practice sports, especially when it comes to the perception of symptoms during sporting activities.

Overall, the implementation of the cardio check-up shows how seriously those responsible at HTC Herne take their commitment to the health of the players. It remains to be seen how these measures will affect the team's performance in the coming season.
