On Friday evening, August 16, 2025, an incident occurred in Cologne that kept train passengers in particular on their toes. A ICE with around 600 passengers was stranded on the open track around 5.30 p.m. after the train unfortunately collided with a support cable of a power pole. Fortunately, there were no injuries in this incident.
The affected passengers had to wait until the train was evacuated until around 9:30 p.m. Two shuttle buses were used to take passengers safely to the nearest train station. At least this logistical challenge could be overcome thanks to a good emergency plan.
Damage and restoration of the route
The defective train was towed to Cologne-Nippes. The repair work was successful and the affected section of the route was reopened to traffic at 1:06 a.m. on Saturday morning. Fortunately, the impact on rail traffic remained minimal as other trains were able to be rerouted, which helped to ease the burden on passengers.
At a time when rail traffic is often affected by unforeseen disruptions, this showed how important well-organized crisis management can be.
