Kufen remains mayor: 57% of the votes in Essen!
In the city of Essen, Thomas Kufen (CDU) remains at the top: with over 57% of the vote, he successfully won the election and is now entering his third term in office. His lead of 22,222 votes, which secured him victory in the runoff election on September 28, 2025, is particularly impressive. In districts like Karnap and Altenessen-Nord he even received 54% of the vote, which underlines his popularity in the region. These results show that Kufen was already ahead in the election on September 14th in all 50 districts and 42 electoral districts, even if the voter turnout in the runoff election was around 28%, significantly lower than the over 50% in the first election.
Julia Klewin from the SPD, who surprisingly better section than expected in the runoff election, could not win against the acting mayor. She personally congratulated runners in the CDU headquarters and praised the fair election campaign. Klewin will belong to the newly elected advice while a grand coalition emerges. Despite the tight output, she noted that it is difficult against a popular incumbent like runners. The election in Essen shows the trend that the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia emerges as the strongest force, while the AfD triples its results, but fails in the stitch elections around the mayor's office. These patterns are also emerging in other cities, where numerous stitch elections took place.
Celebrations and outlook
Kufen's supporters celebrated his victory with a standing ovation, and the newly elected mayor was proud of the trust that the people of Essen had placed in him. In a traditional pub in Essen-Rüttenscheid, he invited his party colleagues for a beer before heading off to work to tackle the tasks at hand. Kufen is optimistic about the future and looks forward to working together in the next five years, as Besnik Kelmendi from Karnap emphasized, thanking the citizens for their trust.
