OBCareer 2025: Discover your future in the SCHWALBE Arena!
On September 6, 2025, the OBCareer 2025 took place in the SCHWALBE Arena in Gummersbach, a conference aimed at around 2,000 upper secondary school students. The aim of the event was to give young people a comprehensive overview of the diverse opportunities for training, dual study programs and other study options. The organizers, the Oberbergischer Kreis region and the TH Köln-Campus Gummersbach, had big plans.
Over 75 regional employers presented over 150 different apprenticeships and dual study programs at this trade fair. These ranged from classic training in skilled trades to innovative careers in IT and healthcare.
Diverse offers and workshops
The event also offered numerous information workshops and an exciting “action corner”. Here the students were able to acquire practical knowledge and try out what awaits them in their future careers. The topics of the workshops included areas such as safety technology, artificial intelligence, everyday care and the ultrasound testing of components. Participants also had the opportunity to get to know the everyday life of an electronics technician or an office management clerk.
District director Klaus Grootens encouraged the students to actively talk to company representatives, while Prof. Dr. Christian Kohls, the dean of the TH Cologne, encouraged young people to be curious and ask questions.
Practical insights and training offers
Among the participating companies was Ferchau, an engineering and IT service provider that offered training positions in areas such as office management, application development and IT specialists. New to the offer was the training-integrated course in business informatics in collaboration with the TH Cologne. The HWK Cologne presented its trial course, which includes a combination of training, master's certificate and bachelor's degree in 4.5 years.
Particularly noteworthy was the “care mile” from P.NetO, which presented 13 member companies from the care industry. Here the students were able to gain their first insights into the diverse training opportunities in the nursing sector. Graduate lawyer Nicole Töper from the Gummersbach District Court also offered day internships and workshops to give the students a realistic impression of their future career.
A very special highlight was the “Happy Trainee Podcast” by Marlene Weiner, which gave valuable insights into companies and training companies and was intended to make decision-making easier for the young people.
Dual training is particularly suitable for young people who want to start working life straight after school. Theory at vocational school and practical work in the company are combined. Many of our young people find that this is the best way to learn, especially since they can earn an income right from the start. There are many opportunities for further training in training, be it to become a master or specialist, and the chances of getting a scholarship are also promising.
For all those who would like to take a closer look at the topic of training and dual study, the organizers have something to offer on the website obkarriere.de useful information provided.
