Cultural hero in focus: Golem Godula enchants Oberhausen on August 23rd!
What's going on in Oberhausen? An exciting event is coming! The Teatr HoM from Tychy, Oberhausen's Polish twin city, will perform a very special piece on the Altmarkt on Saturday, August 23, 2025: “Golem Godula”. This is the theater's third performance in Oberhausen and the anticipation is great. The piece will be played from 9 p.m. and Mayor Daniel Schranz emphasizes the importance of cultural exchange and enrichment through town twinning in his words. At a time when human connections are more important than ever, this event is a step in the right direction to celebrate diverse cultures.
The story revolves around Karl Godulla, a Silesian industrialist who is also known as the “Prussian Zinc King”. Born in Zabrze in 1781, Godulla was instrumental in developing Upper Silesia into a major mining and industrial center. During his lifetime he owned 80 zinc mines, four zinc smelters and 48 coal mines. His thrift and strict employer mentality ensured that he spent his life unmarried and childless. Nevertheless, there is a remarkable story about Johanna Gryzik: he adopted a poor working-class child who was later raised to the nobility. By the way, a district in Ruda still bears his name today: Godullahütten.
Cultural heritage and myths
Karl Godulla's life not only left a great economic mark, but also inspired numerous myths. Dr. In his analysis, Holger Klein-Wiele from the LVR Industrial Museum highlights the influence of industrialization on the region. In a time of change where progress and tradition often clash, this play offers an exciting opportunity to understand the story of Godulla and its context.
Desbina Kallinikidou from the city of Oberhausen is also enthusiastic about the lively exchange with the sister city of Tychy. The cooperation between the two cities, which is characterized by culture, education and the common good, is clearly evident in such events. To make the evening as pleasant as possible, in addition to the city of Oberhausen, the cultural restaurant Gdanska and the LVR Industrial Museum also invite you. And at what price? Entry to this cultural highlight is completely free – a great opportunity for everyone!
