Construction site chaos and train cancellations: That's how it is in Siegerland!

There is currently some important news for travelers and commuters in the Siegerland and Wittgenstein region, which also includes the Olpe and Altenkirchen districts. As the Siegen newspaper reported, a mixture of construction sites, bus route changes and train cancellations lead to sometimes unpredictable timetable conditions. The attractive connections between Siegen and Cologne are particularly affected.

The popular regional express RE9 offers a direct connection to Cologne, which usually takes around 90 minutes. But travelers have to be prepared for frequent delays and cancellations. Comprehensive timetable changes are also planned for the period from August 22nd to September 12th, 2025, which will entail further difficulties, such as VRS explained.

Construction work and its effects

Among the ongoing construction projects, the mega-project Schleifmühlchen in Siegen stands out, which involves the construction of a new roundabout. The first construction work began in May 2023 and will continue for some time. Federal highway 508 in Kredenbach is also currently being repaired, which is putting additional pressure on the traffic situation.

The Rothaarbahn, which runs from Bad Berleburg to Betzdorf, also has to deal with regular cancellations and delays. This is particularly noticeable among commuters who rely on this connection.

Extensive changes in bus and train transport

In addition to the RE9 train cancellations, other lines are also affected. The RE 8 line from Cologne Messe/Deutz to Troisdorf will experience a partial failure from September 9th to 12th. The RB 27 and RB 90 will also temporarily not function continuously, which will noticeably restrict mobility in the region.

The S12 and S19 also have to accept compromises. There are partial cancellations, particularly between Troisdorf and Au (Sieg). Such disruptions not only impact commuters, but also leisure travelers.

As additional support, the Siegener Zeitung offers a free WhatsApp channel for current news and information about construction sites and traffic disruptions. With around 17,000 subscribers already, this service is a quick tool to stay informed about the latest developments.

Overall, it is clear that mobility in the region is currently severely restricted due to the various construction projects and the associated timetable changes. These situations not only cause inconvenience for passengers but also raise questions about transport infrastructure. The standard work “Traffic in Numbers”, published by Federal Ministry of Transport is published, a comprehensive overview of the transport infrastructure in Germany and its development.
