What a remarkable story from Greven! An eighth-grader recently made a name for himself with his entry for the Federal President's renowned history competition. The student mastered this competition, which in the current round has the exciting theme “So far and no further!? Limits in history”, with flying colors. Loud wn.de he actually managed to win one of the coveted state victories.

The history competition, whose participation period ran from September 1, 2024 to February 28, 2025, attracted a record number of over 6,720 young people in this competition. A total of 2,289 entries were submitted – the most successful competition round in 30 years! This shows that in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg, a particularly large number of students took part, like the one Körber Foundation reported.

Borders as a central theme

The contributions deal with the topic of boundaries in a variety of ways. The range extends from personal family stories to historical borderline experiences. Many have focused on the former inner-German border, while others have also undertaken extensive research trips - as far as Hungary, South Korea and South American countries. The topics of flight and migration are frequent focal points that the youngsters address in their work.

The archive gives exciting insights into how students explore historical boundaries, be they social, political, cultural, ecological or geographical. Even the municipal archives found support by providing resources to illuminate the historical dimensions of the borders. There are also numerous impulses from Stuttgart that make you think.

The award and the big prize

A total of 250 state victories will be awarded, and the winners have the chance to win one of the 50 national prizes. Five first prizes will be presented by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on November 11, 2025 at Bellevue Palace in Berlin. With such commitment and creative engagement with their own history, the participating students not only demonstrated their academic skills, but also addressed an important social issue.

It will be exciting to see how the other participants will fare in the second stage of the competition. However, the eighth-grader from Greven has already put his foot in the door for a major award with his impressive contribution. A good hand in the history competition and a great achievement that will certainly make not only his family proud!
