The official presentation of the newly laid artificial turf on the Helenabrunn sports field recently took place in Cologne. Replacing the old artificial turf became necessary after the seams on the artificial turf tracks opened, requiring repeated repairs. The city reported this on its website and added that the city association had already recommended the replacement on November 18, 2024; the city council's final approval followed on December 10th. However, the entire process took longer than expected as delays in the production of the new artificial turf delayed the start of work until September 2025. The work was ultimately completed on October 14, 2025.

A total of 7,255 square meters of new artificial turf was laid, which was filled with 25 kilograms of quartz sand per square meter. This measure is expected to cost less than originally estimated, with the total cost expected to be less than 265,000 euros. Costs and Benefits of Artificial Turf

Renovating an existing space is usually cheaper than building a new one. For a new small playing field that measures around 44m x 22m, the costs are around 85,000 to 125,000 euros. Various items must be taken into account, such as excavation, drainage and the purchase of artificial turf including granules. This shows that many clubs are striving to convert old clay or tennis courts into modern artificial turf pitches in order to ensure that they can be used in bad weather and to increase the club's attractiveness.

There are numerous options for financing such projects, including through online sponsorships, crowdfunding or fundraising runs. Club members' own contributions can also save costs, although one should not ignore the annual care costs of 1,600 to 2,400 euros.

Use of the artificial turf pitch

Although the official inauguration only took place recently, the artificial turf pitch is already fully usable for school and club sports. The city's decision to replace the old pitch with a modern artificial turf surface turns out to be the right one, especially since the advantages of artificial turf are unmistakable: greater playability, less maintenance and an attractive appearance are just a few of the points that will contribute to the use of the pitch.
