Viersen is fighting for a new tennis hall: athletes are mobilizing!
Last Saturday, an impressive number of members and supporters of the tennis clubs TC Süchteln, TC Dülken and Viersen Tennis and Hockey Club gathered in front of the town hall in Viersen. Your goal? To send a strong signal for the urgently needed new tennis hall. The protest was not just a demonstration, but also a clear appeal: “Together for a new hall, because sport brings people together!” The posters also had the message “Viersen leaves its children out in the rain!” to see, and not without reason.
There have been no indoor tennis facilities in Viersen and the surrounding area since summer 2025. This is due to the closure of the hall in Grefrath due to dilapidation, the conversion of the tennis courts in St. Tönis into a padel hall and the change of ownership of the Viersen tennis hall. This development is causing great frustration because over 1,300 athletes, including more than 300 children and young people, are looking for suitable training options.
A common goal
The three clubs not only protested together, but also took the initiative to set up a non-profit GmbH to plan, build and operate a new tennis hall. Concepts, financing plans and architectural designs are already available. However, everyone involved is aware that the political will of the city of Viersen is essential for the success of the plans. At the moment, the main problem is the pending decision on a suitable plot of land, which puts the implementation of the project at risk.
Time is of the essence - every lost month could dwindle the hope of a new hall in autumn 2026. The clubs' boards vent their frustration and emphasize how important a quick decision is for future youth development and game operations. They have already expressed their concerns in discussions with politicians and administration. However, the courage and determination with which the clubs have joined forces is an outstanding example of civic engagement and team spirit.
An interim solution for the winter
In order to defuse the situation for tennis enthusiasts, the three clubs have found an interim solution: This season, the outdoor facilities will also be used for games in winter in order to compensate for the lack of indoor courts. This creative solution offers a temporary way to keep sports running until a permanent solution is found in the form of a new hall.
Tennis has an important role in society - not only as a sport, but also as an effective tool for social integration. Projects around the world use tennis to overcome social barriers and promote communities. It's impressive how sport brings people from different backgrounds together. In the long term, a new tennis hall in Viersen could not only become a place for training, but also a space for social encounters and integration.
So Viersen is facing a turnaround: it is important to hear the committed voices of the population and not leave the next generation of tennis players out in the cold. The current situation should not only be seen as a challenge, but also as an opportunity to create a new place for encounters and sport that goes beyond tennis.
