Honor for poultry farmers: District Administrator Sippel praises commitment to nature!

Yesterday, a ceremonial honoring of 16 poultry farmers took place in the Alzey-Worms district who have distinguished themselves through their outstanding commitment to breed poultry breeding. District Administrator Heiko Sippel not only presented certificates, but also a charming “Munkeltüte” as a thank you. Sippel emphasized the importance of voluntary work for rural areas and the valuable contribution that breeders make to maintaining regional breeding traditions. He recalled the long history of poultry farming, which began around 5,000 years ago.

“In the 1960s, chickens and pigeons were commonplace and an integral part of our lives,” Sippel said. The commitment of breeders is important in order to preserve valuable genetic material. He also highlighted the positive development of young people through youth work in poultry farming. “Here, young people learn to take responsibility and develop an interest in nature and animal protection,” Sippel continued. The support from the breeders' partners was also recognized.

Community growth

Burkhard Itzerodt, chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Association of Pedigree Poultry Breeders, thanked for the award and reported a pleasing increase in members. The regional association currently has around 5,300 members and is not seeing any decline, but rather a heyday of the breeding community. It is important to secure the tradition of poultry farming in the Alzey-Worms district for the future.

Pedigree poultry breeding is not only a regional passion, but also a stroke of the pen in the breadth of German poultry farming. The regional association of pedigree poultry breeders from Württemberg and Hohenzollern brings together over 20,000 members and looks after a total of 3,400 young people in around 500 clubs. A wide range of poultry species are cared for here, including turkeys, geese, bantams and pedigree pigeons, to promote biodiversity and maintain species diversity.

Cancellation of the Federal Winners' Show

The exhibition management sees itself as having a responsibility to protect the welfare of the animals and has decided to cancel the event in order to avoid unnecessary costs and expenses for exhibitors. Urgent applications to revoke the decision have so far been unsuccessful. Information on reimbursement of costs should be made available promptly on the state association’s homepage.

Although this news poses challenges for the poultry farming community, the passion for breeding and social cohesion remain strong. The breeders remain motivated to maintain their traditions and inspire younger generations for this valuable work. Volunteering in poultry farming is therefore not just a hobby, but also a significant contribution to preserving and promoting biodiversity and social structure in our rural regions.
