Car dealership theft: Black Mercedes license plates disappeared!
On the night of Saturday to Sunday, more precisely between July 19, 2025, 11:30 p.m. and July 20, 2025, 7:00 p.m., a black Mercedes-Benz car in Raubach was the target of an unpleasant incident - the theft of its license plate number NR-AB919. The crime took place in a publicly accessible area of a car dealership and the perpetrators are currently unknown. The Neuwied/Rhein police department is therefore urgently looking for witnesses who can provide relevant information about the incident. Anyone who has seen anything is asked to contact the Strassenhaus police station on 02634/9520 or by email at pistrassenhaus@polizei.rlp.de.
The buyers of such stolen license plates often walk the fine line between legal and criminal. According to the ADAC, around 160,000 license plate thefts are recorded in Germany every year. These stolen license plates are often used for other crimes, such as fuel theft. Anyone affected must act quickly: If a license plate is stolen, you must report it to the police immediately. Otherwise, if the worst comes to the worst, you risk losing your right to a new license plate.
Legal framework and consequences
In the event of theft, the stolen license plates will be blocked for ten years. But car insurance usually doesn't cover the costs of theft and the new license plate application. The affected vehicle owners must submit an application for new license plates to their responsible registration office. Some documents are important for this: the identity card, registration certificates parts I and II, the test report from the last general inspection and the report of the loss from the police should be ready.
- Notwendige Unterlagen für den Antrag:
- Personalausweis
- Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I und II
- Prüfbericht der letzten Hauptuntersuchung
- Verlustmeldung der Polizei
Fees of up to 60 euros can quickly be incurred for allocating new license plates and rewriting the vehicle documents, plus around 30 euros for printing the new plates. And driving without a license plate can even be an administrative offense that could result in a fine of up to 60 euros. License plate theft is not prosecuted as a specific offense, but legal bases such as theft (§ 242 StGB), forgery of documents (§ 267 StGB) and misuse of license plates (§ 22 StVG) can apply.
Prevention is required
There are some sensible measures to prevent license plate theft. The use of Torx screws or special anti-theft license plate holders can effectively contribute to security. These holders are not cheap to buy - around 50 euros - but they make theft much more difficult as they can only be opened with special tools. So it's time to take sensible preventive measures, because as the saying goes: "Prevention is better than cure".
The local police are available in case of questions or uncertainties and await information in order to bring the perpetrators to account as quickly as possible. Keep your eyes open because, as is often the case in everyday life, something is happening!
