B428 in Bad Kreuznach: Important closures and diversions in sight!

On the weekend from September 26th to 28th, 2025, drivers in Bad Kreuznach will have to make some changes. For the renovation and further expansion of federal highway 428, there will be a complete closure of the access from the Bosenheimer roundabout to Bosenheimer Straße. This closure applies from Friday evening 7:00 p.m. to Sunday evening 10:00 p.m. The exit out of town behind the Shell gas station is also affected. Diversions have been set up via Schwabenheimer Weg and Riegelgrube so that all businesses in the area can still be reached. The State Office for Mobility (LBM) asks all drivers to use the signposted routes and to understand the disruption. In a further measure to improve traffic management, a second closure will be scheduled from October 10th to 12th, 2025, also from Friday evening to Sunday evening.

This construction work is part of a comprehensive four-lane expansion of the B 428, which will improve the transport infrastructure in the region. Preparatory work is already underway and should be completed by June 30, 2025. This includes, among other things, the establishment of a temporary roundabout at the level of the garden center. From the night of June 29th to 30th, traffic coming from the B 41 will be routed past the new roundabout. An important note for drivers in Bad Kreuznach is that the accessible route runs through the border ditch, where there is only one-way traffic.

Traffic diversions and other measures

For journeys from Bad Kreuznach or Frei-Laubersheim, it is recommended to drive over the Grenzgraben, which is said to be advantageous, especially in terms of saving time during the construction period. The diversions are well signposted from Bosenheim. Road users who want to drive to the REWE store or the VIVA discotheque can drive to the commercial area from both sides. But the return journey from this area is only possible to the right towards Decathlon or garden center.

As the LBM emphasizes, the work can only be carried out under the best weather conditions, which means that short-term postponements are to be expected. The traffic routing will remain in place until autumn, which means that further restrictions are to be expected in two more weekends in order to renovate the connections to Schwabenheimer Weg and Bosenheimer Straße.

Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030

In the context of these measures is also the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan (BVWP) 2030, which acts as a central instrument for federal transport infrastructure planning. With a total volume of around 269.6 billion euros, it aims to eliminate traffic bottlenecks and maintain existing networks. Around 141.6 billion euros have been earmarked for maintaining the existing networks, which lays the foundation for future measures in the region.

The closures and diversions announced today are part of a larger plan that is intended to relieve congested roads and increase traffic safety in the long term. The LBM and the city of Bad Kreuznach ask for patience and understanding during this necessary improvement work, which should ultimately end in November 2025 with the completion of the expansion and renovation of the Bauhaus roundabout.
