Kaiserslautern bird rescuer Kurt Wilhelm: Nominated for Audience Award 2025!
Who would have thought that a garden in Kaiserslautern could not only be a place of relaxation, but also a lifesaver for many birds? Kurt Wilhelm, who has been volunteering as a “bird rescuer” for over 35 years, is now in the starting blocks for the audience award of the “Ehrensache 2025” in Rhineland-Palatinate. As rheinpfalz.de reports, Wilhelm was nominated for his extraordinary achievements, which have accumulated over the last three decades at his bird sanctuary.
Wilhelm runs a rescue center supported by the city, where he has taken in over 4,500 animals. The station primarily looks after injured wild birds, but hedgehogs also find refuge here. His involvement began in 1988 when he received the idea of setting up an aviary. Since then, his garden has become an important point of contact for animals in need of help.
A life for the animals
In addition to the sanctuary, he is also dedicated to maintaining nesting boxes in cemeteries to improve the birds' habitats. During his years of volunteer work, he has successfully nurtured several thousand wild birds. This tireless dedication has given much not only to the animals but also to the community. As [SWR].
The SWR has been awarding the Ehrensache Prize for over 20 years to honor the work of volunteers. This year, ten outstanding individuals were nominated to win the Audience Award. Wilhelm's story has touched many hearts, and starting August 25, 2025, the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite online. The voting ends with the live broadcast of “Ehrensache 2025” on August 31, 2025.
